Liberec
Liberec is situated in the North
Bohemia in the valley between the Ještěd Ridge and the Jizera
Mountains. Liberec was first mentioned in 1352, later it changed into
a feudal town, its rights were confirmed by Emperor Rudolf II. in
1577.
The most important changes proceeded in
the second half of the 18th century. At that time, the centre of
Liberec consisted of brick houses in the classical style. The
beginning of the 19th century brought the growth of the textile
industry. At that time Liberec was, after Prague, the second biggest
town in Bohemia. Nowadays, Liberec offers many interesting sites –
Town hall, Theatre of F. X. Šalda, museum, the Town gallery and
other interesting buildings. From modern architecture you can see the
dominant of Liberec - Ještěd. It is an original construction in the
shape of a rotating hyperboloid built on the hill in the height of
1012m.
Liberec is a centre of sports and culture. There are many skiing areas around Liberec, both at Ještěd and Bedřichov in Jizera mountains. The most known entertainment centre is Babylon, with its Aquapark and other activities.
